The Celebration Company (TCC) of Celebration, FL recently reached an agreement with Osceola County Schools that will finally allow it to begin construction of one of Celebration’s final neighborhoods, Island Village. Island Village will add over 1,300 homes—1,010 single-family homes and 300 multifamily units—to Celebration, bringing it to about 90% full of its expected 8,065 residents, according to its original community masterplan.
Discover the Possibilities of Island Village
Island Village is set to break ground on 370 acres south of World Drive on a stretch of beautiful uplands surrounded by a sea of green wetlands. Its original planning includes parks and civic uses, but limited retail. Access to the community will be through an extension of Celebration Boulevard, south of World Drive, and neighborhoods will be connected through quaint bridges arching over the wetlands.
New Retail Developments in the Area
To incorporate the influx of new residents to the area, there is a new shopping center planned at the World Drive interchange. This 100,000 square foot commercial district will offer a large grocery store and several restaurants. It’s on schedule to break ground in early 2017!
What Were Resident Objections to the New Development?
Residents initially pushed back against the idea of Island Village because it could add up to 1,000 new students to the existing K-8 middle school. The original proposal called for a new middle school to be developed downtown, but residents also objected to this idea as it would replace existing athletic fields, and would not be within walking distance of Island Village, which is a strong focus of Celebration’s community.
Celebration’s School Solution
However, Celebration Residential Owners Association created a special task force to find a better solution. They decided instead that TCC would build a new K-5 school within Island Village to accommodate new students from these neighborhoods. The school is set to open starting the 2019-2020 school year, says Osceola County Schools, and will be paid for either by TCC or the chosen developer (who is yet to be decided).
